Wings to War offered hands-on learning activities for primary and secondary schoolchildren at the WWI trench reconstruction project Digging In, in Glasgow's Pollok Country Park. The Wings to War learning program complemented the activities offered to schools as part of Digging In and its sister project, War & Peas.

Pupils learned about the formation of the RAF, its links with Glasgow and aspects of STEM heritage related to wartime aerial reconnaissance, map-making and medical fitness for flight. They could also try out a replica early 20th-century Antoinette pilot trainer.

University of Glasgow's Department of Engineering (through the Wings to War project) also offered selected schools access to its state-of-the-art virtual reality Bristol Scout flight simulator, which gave pupils a chance to learn about the advances in science, technology, engineering and medicine that facilitated WWI aviation.

The project made expertise from the University of Glasgow accessible to wide audiences, expanding young people's horizons of possibility for the study of STEM subjects. The learning program was designed with the Curriculum for Excellence in mind, to ensure the activities complemented coursework and helped deliver benchmarks.
